Elder Abuse takes many forms: physical, sexual, financial, psychological, neglect - and most often it is perpetrated by someone known by the Elder .  If you don't think this is a problem in your community - you have not looked deeply enough into the care or lack of care the Elders around you receive. 

June has become the month during which International attention is focused on the plight of Elders in all societies.  June 15 is recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and like Elder's themselves, this day receives brief mention and fades back into obscurity.  Every day of every year needs to be Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The greatest form of Elder Abuse is not physical.  It is not sexual and not even financial or psychological.  The greatest form of Elder abuse is not perpetrated by criminals or family members.  The greatest form of social abuse in the world today is societal neglect.  Even cultures where aging has traditionally been a source of respect, accomplishment and pride, aging individuals are being seen as burdens on society, as individuals who drain scarce resources, and as reminders that our lives are inherently terminal.  Read More
